Ellsworth, ME

When I opened my eyes at 7:00 o’clock this morning it was clear as a bell! Looked like an Acadia National Park day to us! Hopped out and got going.

What a little jewel of nature this place is. It’s filled with forest (Maine is still 80% forest) Several kinds of pines with white beech and red maples mixed in. So serene…it reminds me of the redwoods…it has that kind of peaceful beauty. Cadillac Mountain is only 1500 ft elevation…not much by our standards…but when it overlooks a crashing seashore…wow! We were up there so early that for a little while we had this magic place to ourselves. The wind was blowing and it was chilly! I was glad to have my new Maine sweatshirt! The sky was filled with billowing white clouds and my polarizing filter got a workout. I stood up on the top of the world and put my arms out in the wind…and I was flying! (OK, so maybe I wasn’t but it felt like it!)

Back home for lunch…A lobster roll from McDonald’s!! And good too!

We set off for The Blue Hill County Fair…a real old timey country fair! Full of kids showing their heifers and ‘beaming’ when they won. We toured the 4-H barn and looked at all the animals with their prizes and ribbons. Asked after a Hamster that a youngster was carrying with him and shyly…out from behind his back came a first prize blue ribbon! There was a petting area in one of the barns, just full of BABY ANIMALS …new born calves and piglets and chickens and lambs etc. The kids just were having the best time.

We cheered on the oxen in the ‘pulling’ contest. Ate our way down the midway…Had bar-b-queued turkey and ribs to die for. We shared picnic tables and talked to the people sitting with us…One was vacationing from Kentucky and told us several places not to miss. Checked out the produce barn and all the prize winning jams and jellies and home made quilts. Then we ‘sampled’ homemade cookies and brownies…had to have cotton candy.

Watched the fastest truck in the world whip around the track…had flames coming out of it! And then ate blueberry and strawberry cobbler with whipped cream! And then came home stuffed and tired but…happy!
