Fox Ridge State Park, Illinois

Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site

We’d never heard of this place. A chance pull in at a rest stop, a brochure, and our philosophy of ‘ The joy is in the JOURNEY’ brought us here and gave us a day of peace.09_15_cabin

The ‘Lincoln Log Cabin’ is the last farm of Abraham Lincoln’s parents. By this time Abe was a lawyer in Springfield, Illinois. He rode the eighth judicial circuit which brought him here to visit his parents twice a year.

We stepped into our ‘time machine’ and back into the summer of 1845…It felt like magic…the kind of thing I used to dream I could do as a child! This was a wonderful day…one to press in our memory book and cherish.

These folks just go about their daily business while you watch. They grow their own crops here and this lady is cooking the daily lunch for the workers on the farm.

The pan on the side is full of buttermilk biscuits that are cooking with a layer of coals above and beneath them. Ah…the aroma!

This young filly is being trained to work in harness. She is attached to her mother only by a halter but that’s making her comfortable walking in close proximity to another animal. By the time she is ready for the harness she won’t be afraid.
