Great Sand Dunes National Monument

It’s hard to realize the immensity of the dunes, until you notice that there is ‘another’ couple in the picture…to the left and a few ridges back.

These are the tallest sand dunes in North America and rise in a corner of the high-mountain San Luis Valley in the Colorado Rockies. They reach to nearly 750 feet in some places.

The first visitors to the dunes hunted giant Columbian mammoths; their spear points have been found with mammoth teeth and pieces of tusks have been found in the sand.07_19_bigdune
