Prentis Leewright is a talented artist, carver, writer and historian.

And he has given his family an incredible gift…the gift of his own memories.

All too often, in the bustling world in which we live, our youngsters don’t care about the past. But it’s amazing just how MUCH it matters as they get older and try to put their own lives in perspective.

How desperately wish I could sit down, just once more, with my sweet mother and listen with a more attentive ear, to the stories of ‘the old days’. How dear are the stories that I remember…but how many more are lost to me forever.

Prentis wrote a book about growing up in Oklahoma during the dust bowl years. He writes about the little things that made up daily life. And because of this gift his family will always know their heritage was one of courage in the face of adversity. He says children read it and say “Was it REALLY like that?” “Oh, yes,” he smiles, “I was there.”

So PLEASE PLEASE…Ask your parents, your grandparents, and those of you lucky enough to have great grand parents to write down their own stories. Or to dictate them to you. Write your OWN stories even if no one asks…because someday, someone will treasure that gift more than you can know. We are all part of the great puzzle of American history. When someone dies with an untold story, a puzzle piece is forever missing…
