Sea Lion Caves

The Steller Sea Lions were sprawled all over the rocks below us…the cows and their babies and the enormous old bulls.

What will always stay with me is the sound…the roars and bellows of the huge males, weighting as much as 1500 lbs., as they protect their ‘harems’.

We saw two of these giants throw themselves at each other, lose their balance, and tumble into the sea…only to continue to fight…rolling over and over in the crashing waves below.

The cave is ‘other worldly’ One big ‘old man’ almost had the place to himself…most found the sun irresistible.

The noise inside must be incredible when it’s full. The Sea Lions winter in here when storms pound the shore. We rode an elevator 200 feet down through solid rock to visit this unique place.06_02_cave
