Bachelor City

07_10_pictureJoe and Diane have a 4 wheel drive truck and they took us on the Bachelor Historic Tour. It’s a 17 mile drive on steep, narrow, winding and rough unpaved mountain roads, through much of the mining history of this region.

It was said of Bachelor…”The camp was a bustling one, and composed…of the rougher, reckless types of Westerns, men who neither feared nor shunned danger, and to whom ‘knockdown and drag-out fights were merely ordinary recreation. Brawls and pistol-play were nightly occurrence in the numerous saloons and gambling dens that infested the place…the character of Bachelor remained tough.” Bachelor City, 1892

Bachelor City site…2001

It ‘s hard to picture the violence of the past in this peaceful place. There are only a few buildings falling into ruins, to remind you of those hard times and brutal days.

Over time….The sun burns down…the winds blow… the buildings crumble, the vegetation covers them. The seasons change and change again…until only yellowing pictures show a glimpse of the past. No matter how seriously we take ourselves…we leave such faint footprints upon this earth.
