Kansas and Missouri

Septemer 7, 2000…..Wichita, KS

Did the ‘big city’…Hobby Lobby, a ‘real’ mall, dinner and a show…”What Lies Beneath” And MOST importantly Rick picked up carving material at Rossiters. Should be enough to last him a while…like the rest of his natural life! (grin)

September 8, 2000…..Wichita, KS

THE COMPUTER LIVES! It turned out to not be the computer at all, but a faulty mouse that was locking up the system. Oh, man is that a relief!! Tomorrow we are out of here.

There is an insect here that makes a loud buzzing noise and a bunch of them together make a VERY loud buzzing noise! The sound builds to a crescendo and then dies away…over and over. I think it’s called a Cicada. In any case I asked someone here “What’s the name of that insect”? He, raising his voice to be heard, said “What insect”? I, not wanting to yell, just pointed upwards, to the tree over our heads. He got a quizzical look on his face and said “Ah, em, ah…well I think that’s a “Wichita singing bug!” Yeah…yeah…SURE it is!

September 9, 2000…..Springfield, MO Springfield KOA campground

We drove through Parsons, Kansas today…and everywhere there was evidence of damage. Steel beams of buildings twisted like pretzels. Two months ago a tornado touched down in Parsons… I spent the rest of the day looking dubiously upward at the dark clouds that continued to build in front of us as we drove east.

This is a pretty, shady RV park. I was just congratulating myself on our superb choice when just behind this very large hedge and windrow nearby… came the sound of a TRAIN roaring though an intersection…horns blasting! And a few minutes later another, from the other direction…horns blasting. I do believe that sound is going to be more then enough to drown out the noise from the ‘Wichita singing bugs…which appear to have followed us from their hometown!

September 10, 2000…..Branson, Mo Branson View RV Park

No way are we going to make the rally…so we are just going to poke around here in Branson for a bit. We went to a huge craft place today. There was a wood carver doing similar things to what Rick is doing…only not as good! He’s charging a pretty penny…That was an eye opener.

The good news…the computer works. The bad news…now the modem won’t connect to Earthlink…back to square one in communication…sigh.
