We watched the mama carefully construct the nest, saw the tiny eggs nestled in there, and then two tiny hummingbirds with their eyes not yet open…just their beaks sticking out of the nest! It was getting really crowded as the days went on and today…by a stroke of luck… we saw these first attempts to leave the nest. First one little one slowly made his way out on an ivy branch and flapped his wings over and over…and then the next one followed. How much courage it must take to step off into the air! It’s said that the reason that birds can fly is because they think they can!
Tonight the nest is empty…It makes me sad…I’m going to miss watching the little ones. Do you think this might be the ’empty nest syndrome’ that people talk about? (grin)
