Eugene, Ore

Today our friends, Bonnie and Mike, introduced us to a fascinating activity called ‘Geo cache’. It’s like a scavenger hunt played with a GPS.

Folks hide ‘treasures’ in an undisclosed location and post the GPS coordinates on the web along with a few hints…and the hunt begins! We still have a lot to learn but we had a ball this afternoon.

We found this ‘cache’ hidden in the hollow of an old tree in a local park. When you find it you take an object out and leave one of equal value in exchange.

Here is a picture of the hidden ‘treasure’ along with the map Bonnie had printed out with the coordinates, a camera she brought to record the find, a hand held GPS unit, and last, but not least, a walking stick to poke around in places.

Today poor Mike discovered that sometimes even a pole doesn’t help. He was investigating a hollow tree of his own when a whole ‘herd’ of biting ants raced up his stick and inside his clothes. They then commenced to teach him a lesson about keeping his belongings out of their nest! By the time we heard his appeals for help and arrived, he had already taken off his shirt…AND his tee shirt and was doing a very credible Indian war dance around the tree. But…because of extreme bravery under fire (ants) he did manage NOT to drop his drawers for an extended ant search! WHAT A GUY!
