August 6 Pagosa Springs

While we were eating breakfast this morning a doe wandered through the campground. What abundant and rich wildlife fills this place! We took a hike and on the way back, stopped in the lodge, and made reservations for August of next year. Got the last spot in the trees. The campers here, for the most part, are seasonal and come back every year. We overheard one conversation where they were saying they were “third generation” to spend the summers here.

Rick is outside bar-b-qing chicken. He’s just informed me that he’s run out of Propane…midway to being finished. (Of course the ranch is 16 miles out of town, where the nearest store lives) Now he is rushing around firing up the briquettes! Thank goodness we aren’t cooking for company! (grin)

The ol’ fishing hole

We’ve pretty much fallen head over heels in love with this area. The scenery is truly breathtaking. There is a catch and release pond to fish in and a river just down the road. And miles and miles of places to explore on foot. Birds to wake us up and coyotes to sing us to sleep. The only ‘potential’ problem is bears. It’s been so dry they are desperate for food. We just read that they have been breaking into cabins, right through the glass windows, to get at food, even if humans happen to be eating it at the moment! We have stopped hiking after dark!
