Taos Pueblo

We’ve never visited an Indian pueblo before and it was fascinating! One lady said “Welcome to our home” as she was passing by. This isn’t just a place to photograph…this is ‘home’ to these people. AND it is considered to be the oldest continuously inhabited community in the United States!

The building in the picture is well over 1000 years old. It looks much like it did when the conquistadors first arrived. The exception is the introduction of doorways. At one time, the only entryway into the homes was by ladder in the rooftops. If an enemy was approaching the ladders were pulled from the ground to the rooftops.

The pueblo has no electricity and no running water within the sacred village.  Many of the homes have wood stoves for cooking but some families still cook right in the fireplace.

And we fret if our cable TV goes out!!!
