The Mammoth Site Hot Springs, SD

Today we walked on the edge of a 26,000-year-old sinkhole where mammoths, bears, lions, and wolves once walked. It’s one of the treasures of the ice age!

Once upon a time there was a limestone cave. When it’s roof collapsed it was slowly filled with water by a spring. And over eons of time…animals came to drink and slipped down the shale sides and were trapped. Layer upon layer of these great and small creatures were preserved.

As we stood there in that still place I could imagine the great squeals and bellows and thrashing and splashing and finally the quiet as the beasts at last gave up their struggle. And now we could see their bones…their death throes no longer a secret in a forgotten place.

Lara is a young paleontologist that is painstakingly working on the tusk of a mammoth. She says “I love this job!” I’ll bet she does…can you imagine the thrill of uncovering the secrets of the past?09_29_0049_lara 09_29_0061_mammoth
