Animas Forks

A Historic Mining Town in the San Juan Mountains

Animas Forks was established in 1873 and is the most photographed ‘ghost town’ in Colorado. You have to WANT to photograph it because unless you have a four-wheel drive vehicle it is not an easy trip.

It’s located 12 miles out of Silverton, at an elevation of 11,200 feet. The first 2 miles is paved and the next 5 miles is a fairly good dirt road…But then hang on to your seats kids…it gets a bit white knuckle. It’s a one lane rocky road but manageable if you never go above 5 to 10 miles an hour and the passenger never opens her eyes!

You can explore these old buildings to your hearts content. They are ‘fairly’ safe as long as you are careful where you step.

Animas Forks is a fascinating glimpse into our county’s past. I loved every minute we spent there.08_25_cabin 08_25_bright_rock
