Navajo basket weaving

The high sweet notes of Indian flute music drifted on the air and the intense smell of Juniper and Pinion trees after a rain was heady stuff.

High on the mesa of Chimney Rock…a place still sacred to the Indians of the present, as it was long ago, we came to watch those that still practice the age-old crafts.

There was everything from making arrows, grinding of corn, fashioning rope from Yucca plants to spinning wool. But I was most fascinated with the Navajo basket weaving…

I watched Mary work for a long time…amazed at the skill and the patience it took to produce this beautiful piece of art. Literally weeks of labor goes into each piece. I bought this little bowl…I couldn’t walk away…so powerfully did it speak to me.07_24_mary
