High Desert Museum Bend, Oregon

These beautiful bronzes of a deer and her newborn twins are at the entrance to the museum.

This is one of the neatest museums in the United States. It contains an intriguing mixture of history, artwork and wildlife.

Here a trainer teaches a young Red-tailed Hawk to tolerate touching. The handler says that the ruffled head feathers means the hawk is not happy at the invasion of his ‘personal space’.

It’s particularly amazing since we had just been watching him tear a chick apart a few seconds before and gulp it down. That beak is a powerful thing…05_30_handler
