Visiting Zion National Park

Oct 14 Hurricane, Utah

Well, we finally broke away from Kaysville. On the news tonight they said “Possible snow” north of Salt Lake. Out..just under the wire!

Oct 15 Visiting Zion National Park

The weather is perfect and we went up the canyon to visit Zion National Park. In the Visitor Center was a weather advisory. Winds tonight, with gusts up to 67 miles per hour. When I was hiking along a river later, I looked up at the towering red cliffs and there were climbers about half way up the cliff. This is a three-day climb. As I sit here tonight and listen to the breeze pick up, I keep thinking of those men clinging to that rock face in the darkness and..the wind.

I met the cutest young gal from Poland today. Her name is Agatha and she’s a student at the University of Poland. She’s been traveling here alone for 5 months.

That girl has been some places and seen some things! Talks about sailing off the coast of Maine, listening to jazz in New Orleans, horseback riding in Wyoming..and on and on!

She sheepishly told me she is finishing up at Disneyland! Said her mom says, “that”s for kids! I told her about the time we were at Disneyland and there were noisy children all around. Two little old ladies were in line ahead of us and one turned to the other and said, “I think it is just awful that they let children in a place like this!” Agatha about fell off the rock she was sitting on ..laughing. Trust me Agatha it’s NOT just for kids!

We checked out the Virgin Trading Post on the way up the canyon. Had to share the “boardwalk” with another couple.

We bought Gabriel a “Coon skin cap”. His daddy had a Daniel Boone cap when he was about the same age.

The canyons of Zion are a deep shade of red and the green trees stand out in sharp relief.10-15_red_cliff

I couldn’t get the top of the canyon in the same shot as the bottom..heck I couldn’t get the MIDDLE of it in the same shot! The Virgin River has carved out this enormous canyon, over a three million-year period.

It made me feel so insignificant standing in this place. In the grand scheme of things, our lifetimes aren’t a drop in that meandering river!
