I have to say that the Mormon Tabernacle Choir will stand out as one of the highlights of the trip. We were so taken with the music the other day that we hauled out of bed at 6:30 am to go in and see the Sunday morning broadcast!
It was quite a touching moment. The ‘soloist’ I admired some much, during rehearsal, turned out to be the wife of the conductor. She is JoAnn Ottley, the famous Metropolitan Opera soprano! No wonder I was so impressed with her voice! Her husband is retiring after 25 years of leading the choir and she had come to sing for him.
Love in a pure and soaring voice! We sat in the balcony, front and center, one row back…at the suggestion of an usher. He told us the choir members always had their families sit in that spot!
The lady in front of me was introduced as the famous singer, Petula Clark. When JoAnn Ottley was performing, Petula kept shaking her head in awe. Even a singer was impressed!
Temple square is an interesting place to walk around. It was so quiet on a Sunday morning. No stores open..just a few people taking in the sights.
The LDS Church is huge, with gold heralds that gleam in the sun and lovely grounds. Inside the main office is a gigantic picture of Jesus, with arms out stretched. Guess they thought it was a good idea to put up a picture of the Boss!
The State Capital building is within easy walking distance. I risked ‘life and limb’ to grab a shot, with the famous Seagull entry.
Long ago, when the crops where threatened by an invasion of grasshoppers, a flock of seagulls flew in and saved the day! The Seagull is Utah’s state bird!
