Aug 1, 1999…..St. Regis, MT

We finally dragged our selves away from the Moscow area and are headed toward Glacier National Park. The lady at the campground here at St. Regis made a point of asking us to put out our trash before 7:00 pm because the bears are coming in at night. Seems the berries are ripe and they are coming for that (and anything else).

They raise cherries here….we bought some just picked….and boy are they sweet and juicy.

A modem…it was so nice to pick up messages. Amazing how ‘at home’ that makes me feel!

Beautiful drive today…we got off of the interstate and just poked along. We stopped in the little town of Paradise. The story of my life “Just another day in Paradise!”

I think that Flat Head Lake is prettier then Cour D’ Alene. Ugly name…gorgeous lake!

This town has not one but TWO stamp and craft stores. I played in one today and saved the other for another time.

It’s hot and clear…but there are thunderclouds about…made for a wonderful sunset…This is Big Sky Country and it shows.

The people next door are farmers from Iowa. Their farm has 1600 acres…that’s not out plowing the south forty with a mule! They invited us over to visit…you would have thought that we were old friends of the family. Gave us some corn they brought along from the farm. While we were chatting the skies opened up and the rain poured! We had a nice visit accompanied by the sound of pounding rain on the roof!

This morning when they pulled out they thanked us for ‘being such good neighbors”…Well, right back at you. One of the most fun parts of being on the road is the people you meet! And the glimpses it gives you into other worlds.

Now we know something of growing up as farm child in Iowa…and something of droughts, and farm politics and funny things that happened to them. One daughter while working with a multiple extension disc (30 or 40 feet wide) that has lowering ‘wings’ on the sides…mixed up her levers. And instead of getting a row 40 feet wide…she plowed a narrow strip. Then when she got to the gate she flipped the lever she thought would raise the wings…but in fact lowered them and took out 40 feet of fence going through!

Such a different life than the one we have led…how enriching it is to talk and laugh and share a little bit of ourselves with each other.

Drove down to Flathead Lake to look the area over. We found a nice campground and reserved it for a week. There were big thunderheads building as we headed back.
