Danville, KY…….Oct. 15

Yellow leaves…the prettiest ones I’d found. I took a short walk and picked up a few before we left. Then we had a long slow drive through the Appalachian Mountains. They are low, rolling, tree covered. There appears to be very little population in the eastern part of West Virginia. 12 hours later…we arrived in Kentucky…in the dark and stayed awake (barely) long enough to climb into bed.

We are deep in the blue grass hills of Kentucky! Found the kind of antique store that I’d dreamed of finding…dark, jumbled, and full of affordable treasures! The owner talked “down South” and chewed tobacco. I bought a drinking cup made from a horn…he said that it was the kind that was carried by pioneers on the treks across country. We also bought a Union button and two bullets…one Union and one Confederate, that were found on the Perryville Battlefield, and a wonderful hardback book about the Perryville Battle. That’s the battlefield where my great grandfather Wilson fought in the Civil War. I can’t put the book down…it’s absolutely fascinating! They have a wonderful museum about the battle here. Rick found my great grand father in the computer! That was a funny feeling to see the information about him…George Wilson, pvt. of the 52nd Regiment of the Ohio Infantry. Commander: Daniel Cowen, Brigade: D. McCook, Division: Sheridan, Corps: Gilbert. 0-killed, 3-wounded, 0-missing. Weapon-M1861 Springfield .58. “Hit in the shoulder, slightly, from Cowen’s report. (although he suffered from this wound all his life ) Regimental History says he was also wounded in the hand, early in the AM.”
