Oklahoma City, OK

The alarm didn’t go off this morning! So we didn’t hit the road until 5:30am….but we were treated with a beautiful sight. Now there is a tiny crescent moon to keep our eastern star company. The sunrise was all pink and lavender. We passed a giant cross spread out against the morning sky….what a sight. Wonder what the story is….it’s all alone in miles and miles of grassland.

I was taking my usual morning snooze (or snore…depending on to whom you are speaking!) when Rick tapped me on the shoulder. He said “Something is not right here…the battery isn’t charging”. Gulp… He pulled over into a rest picnic area in the middle of nowhere. And sure enough, once the key was turned off….it was dead as a door nail. Thank God for the car….I’m not sure what in the world we would have done…no phone there. He took off in the car to hunt for a battery and I settled down for a LONG wait. By this time it was 8:45 and the sweat was already dripping off of me. Of course this *would* be the day we started late. I can’t believe how lonely and quiet the motor home suddenly got! But it only took an hour! Man was I glad to see him walk back in the door with a brand new battery.. Alas….it started…but still wasn’t charging. Just to be safe we decided that he would start out and I would follow in the car. We had purchased little hand held radios for just this kind of thing. The better to chat while we motored….if it became necessary. It did give me a secure feeling.

We were going through some construction work on a divided two lane highway and all of a sudden there was the loudest *most* horrendous crashing sound right to the side and behind me. I about jumped out of the car! From where they were looking and the horrified expressions on the construction workers faces, I expect there was a severe collision in the lanes going the other direction. I took a quick glance but didn’t have time to see anything (didn’t try very hard!) because we were in a constricted lane, next to a concrete barrier. It sure put our little mechanical problem into perspective. And then in a little while on the radio came Rick.”. It’s charrrrrging”! Don’t know if it is a loose connection or what. I expect we may be revisiting this problem but for now…it just feels good to be on the road again!

We took a side trip to Elk City Oklahoma to see the ‘NATIONAL HIGHWAY 66 MUSEUM’. It was *so* worth the trip! It brought back such memories. The little mom and pop motels and the tiny gas stations and, the wonderful drive-ins of the 50’s. There are actually three museums there. The opening of the frontier came alive! They have such accessible displays…at yesterday’s museum we were looking through glass…today merely across a rope. You wouldn’t think there would be such a difference…but there is!

And then as we were walking out, the people ahead of us told the museum lady that they were from Riverside! And when she turned around it was a gal I had worked with at Riverside Community Hospital for years! And do you think I could think of her name? (a senior moment)

Turns out she couldn’t remember mine either! Two senior moments! (Grin) We could always play off of one another. So we started this *show* for the little museum lady.” What do you mean you can’t remember my name? We were best friends for 20 years etc. etc. The little lady spoke up, in all seriousness and said “I heard about something like this on TV”! By then we were laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes.
