‘Abundant Memories’

05_31_two_chairsThere doesn’t seem to be any end to things to do around here. A few miles out of town is a funny little place called Abundant Memories.05_31_abundant_store

When you walk through the door of this little store…you walk into a very strange but fascinating…world. Out in back is a ‘village’ of 26 buildings full of historical artifacts that have been gathered over 50 years of antique hunting. It’s amazing what one man can collect given the determination.

There is a presentation…a patriotic living history stage show by the man that found all the treasures within. There were only four of us in the audience but that didn’t seem to dampen ‘his enthusiasm. His voice would go from a shout to a whisper as he talked about the civil war. It came alive. He told about Grant and Lee sitting down at a table. Grant knowing that in a few seconds, if Lee would sign the piece of paper in front of him, the ‘insanity’ of 4 years would be over. How Lincoln had told him over and over “If they will surrender…LET THEM DOWN EASY!” And how Grant refused to take Lee’s sword and quietly said, as Lee was walking toward the door, “General tell your men that they can take their horses with them…they’ll need them for plowing.”05_31_memories

As he talked he would don the hat of the era. At one point, wearing a union cap, he glanced up at the annoying banging sound overhead. The only time he broke out of his ‘identity’ he scowled at us and said “I told them not to do this while I was talking!” And turning his head upward, bellowed “If you want your your paycheck in the morning you’ll cut out that infernal NOISE!” A meek voice came drifting down from above. “Oh…..Okay.” In the sudden quiet a satisfied look appeared on the shouter’s face…and a union soldier reappeared!
