Yesterday, after lunch, we took off to visit White Sands National Monument. What an incredible sight! As far as you can see the desert is covered with pure, eye blinding, white sand! It looks, for all the world, like it is completely snow covered.
At the northern end of the Chihuahuan Desert lies a mountain-ringed valley. Here great wave-like dunes of gypsum sand have engulfed 275 square miles of desert.
We hiked out over the dunes….always mindful of where we were. The rangers caution you that it is easy to become disoriented in this endless white. It looks like sugar but is surprisingly firm…like walking on wet sand.
