Your eyes sure have room to stretch in this countryside. Mile after mile of rolling hills. Apparently this is where “The Antelope play”. We saw quite a few of them. Today they looked more like they were grazing then playing. There were a lot of tiny ones, however, so they must play SOMETIMES. And with just a touch of imagination we also saw…a few Shoshone warriors galloping up the draw.
We visited a replica of Old Fort Hall where Nathaniel Wyeth built a trading post to trade with trappers and the Shoshone. It became the gateway to the Pacific Northwest when the great migration began along the Oregon Trail.
They showed the trading room…full of whiskey and blankets and cloth goods and knifes and the like,
The bits of history are fascinating. They have the original ledger of trade goods. One of the buyers was Kit Carson. He bought some tobacco, coffee and a couple of flannel shirts. Stories about him thrilled me when I was a kid but seeing that ledger…that made him real!
