A beautiful clear blue day! We visited the Japanese Garden in Portland many years ago and we decided to visit again today. It’s acclaimed as the most authentic Japanese garden in the United States. I can well believe it.

There isn’t a jarring note anywhere your eye wanders. Even the flower petals on the ground look like they’ve been carefully placed there. Line and flow…a timeless feeling.

The International Rose Test Garden is just across the street. About a third of the roses are in bloom. We wandered around and sniffed to our hearts content. A man was playing the dulcimer…so soft music as well as perfume floated on the air.6_1_rose_garden

There was a famous poem there that I’ve always loved.

In a Garden

The kiss of the sun…for pardon
The song of the birds…for mirth
One is nearer God’s heart in a garden
Than anywhere else on earth.
